Fort Madison is a relatively small city located in the southeast corner of Iowa along one of the widest portions of the Mississippi River, across from Hancock County, Illinois. Serving as one of two seats of Lee County, Fort Madison covers 9.5 square miles of land, home a population of close to 11,000 people under the motto, Always Moving.
The city was founded at the site of the regions first U.S. military fort, and history defines the community to this day. The Fort Madison Downtown Commercial Historic District maintains several well-preserved 19th century storefronts, while the Park-to-Park Residential Historic District showcases homes of the Gothic, Victorian and Tudor eras. The Sheaffer Pen factory operated in Fort Madison until 2007, and the Fort Madison Toll Bridge stands as the last double swing-span bridge on the Mississippi River.
