Nauvoo, IL

The small city of Nauvoo, IL, is located in Hancock County on a wide bend in the Mississippi River, about 10 miles south of Fort Madison, IA. Roughly 1,100 people live in Nauvoo today, across a land area of 3.4 square miles.

Nauvoo is rich in Mormon history, starting in 1839 when arriving Mormons bought the small town of Commerce and renamed it the following year. Today the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints owns most of the historic sites in Nauvoo, including the homes of Brigham Young and other early church members. Most of these sites are open to the public, as Nauvoo has become a historical tourism destination. The rebuilt Nauvoo Illinois Temple was completed in 2002, joining many other places of worship within the city.
