West Point was settled around 1834 and later incorporated in 1858, with the citys name chosen by officers at Fort Des Moines. Today, West Point takes pride in being the Home of the Sweet Corn Festival, an annual summer event and the largest of its kind in the state. First held in 1958, the festival attracts about 25,000 visitors with its entertainment, events and more than 17 tons of free sweet corn. Meanwhile, West Point maintains nearly 100 acres of parkland and several thriving retail businesses.
